Road trips leave much time for thinking. Here is one of the things I said to myself in my brain. (And then I spoke out loud to Hannah.)
Q. "Krista, you've been skating a long time. How many times in your lifetime do you reckon you've tied a pair of skates?"
A. Childhood: I probably learned to tie my skates at the age of 8. (That's a total guess. ) When I was a kid I spent as much time as possible out on our farm's rink that Dad made every winter. So let's say from November to March (20 weeks x 4 days/week = 80 times/year). Let's say that this was the usual behaviour from age 8-15. That's 7 years x 80 times/year = 560 times.
Minor Hockey: I started playing minor hockey in Lacombe around age 15. We played from October to March (24 weeks x 3 days/week = 72 times/year). I played for 3 years x 72 times/year = 216 times.
Senior Hockey: Then I upgraded to Senior Hockey in Red Deer. Again, October to March (24 weeks x 2 days/week = 48 times/year). I played there for 3 years x 48 times/year = 144 times. Upon moving to Vancouver it's been about the same story = 144 times.
YWAM Hockey: I was part of two hockey-focused DTSes, being on the ice in Vancouver and traveling to Russia. We were on the ice about 3 times/week x 12 weeks in Vancouver = 36 times. In Russia we were probably on the ice 5 times/week x 8 weeks = 40 times. Double that amount for two DTSes works out to 36 + 40 x 2 = 152 times. I also traveled around Western Canada instructing at hockey camps. Let's say 2 times/day x 4 days/week x 5 weeks x 2 summeres = 80 times.
Add another 150 times give or take for YWAM Hockey coach's ice times in summer + tying my friends' and kids' skates + my travel to the Czech Republic in 2007 + junior high school hockey at Lacombe Christian School + all the times I've randomly gone public skating or outdoor skating in Alberta outside of what I already listed....
Grand total: 1446 times.
That's a lot of hangnails.
Having said all that, I do not have some old ratty notebook hidden in the bottom of my hockey bag where I've been keeping tally marks all these years. Unfortunately, I didn't have the foresight at age 6 to think about how useful and important that could've been.
But, that's a fairly close estimate.
....
I bet you're glad you sat down to read this post.

Always knew you were good at math! Did you add in all the hockey practices and L.C.S.?
yeah the practices are included in the weekly ice times and i accounted for LCS in the 150 i tacked on at the end. LCS was only like 2 ice times a month though
