Last week I embarked on a grand adventure... a week-long cruise to Alaska with my family. It was a gift from my mom to all of us. It was a pretty awesome vacation. The ship was huge with over 2700 passengers and 1300 crew. *jaw drop* There were at least 5 pools and 7 hot tubs on board, many restaurants with never-ending food, a theater for live entertainment, a casino, arcades, shuffleboard, jumbo chess, a fitness center and spa, shops, and of course a lot of cabins. We spent a few days on the ship and also landed in 3 ports-of-call: Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. We joined some pretty fun excursions like sea kayaking, ziplining, and hiking and also got to tour some of those historic Alaskan towns by train and bus. Our final landing spot was in Anchorage where we spent a night and watched a live dog-sled show before flying home on Sunday. Alaska is a beautiful place and I would definitely go back. We saw countless glaciers- I've never seen so many glaciers in such a short amount of time. It has quickly taken a place near the top on my list of favorite states. Check out the picture above as my brother Mike, my sister Heidi and I enjoyed the hot tub on a sunny day with mountainous views on all sides.
In other news, upon returning home to my roommates, I noticed something different about the place where our little fish tank usually sits with our little beta fish, Sir Benjamin Franklin, swimming around in it - the tank was gone. I asked, "Where's the fish?" and I was met by an ominous look from Laura (the owner and caretaker of the fish) and an "Uh-oh" from Rene as she looked over at Laura. Sadly, Benji died last week, while I was in Alaska and he went to his grave in the swirling waters of the toilet. We're not sure why he died, but we had him in our house since November of 2006. He managed to live pretty long for a little beta fish. He was a gift to Laura from our friend Aubrey. Lately he hadn't been looking so well- his colors were a bit off but we thought he'd be ok. So now we are petless... unless ants count as pets.
Which leads me to my next topic. We have ants. They have formed a little trail from our front door where they are getting in through a crack, along the living room floor into the kitchen, up the fridge, and across the kitchen counter. If you leave the fridge open too long, they sneak in there as well. It's kind of gross. So we know have 6 ant traps strategically placed and we're hoping that will solve the problem. I know we're supposed to learn from ants like how the Bible always says to work like ants, but frankly, I'd rather they took their work to someone else's kitchen.
Speaking of ants, the Detroit Red Wings have won the Stanley Cup. I am not ok with that. I was cheering for Pittsburgh. I do not like Detroit. And I didn't even get to watch any of it cuz the TV's on the cruise ship didn't show any hockey. Psh.
Enough said about that.
I've changed a bit of the look of my page and added a new list to the sidebar called My Cities of 2008. Check it out.
And here is a topic of conversation. You know those walk buttons you hit when you want to cross the street and how some of them do a sort of double-beep when you hit them? Lately I have been observing a lot of people who stand there and hit it like 20 times... and it's not a nice beep... and they seem to think it will help the light change faster so they can get across the street quicker. What is with that? So my question to you is: how many times do you hit the walk button? I average 1-2 hits.
